Game 29 - Alabama vs. Southern Illinois 2004
Rare is the 8/9 game that delivers drama in the Tournament. Our 29th game of the first round goes back to 2004. That Alabama was viewed by many to have been one of the last teams in the Tournament paired with Southern Illinois' view of disrespect in their ninth seed was merely a cherry on top.
The Crimson Tide dominated for most of the first half, working up to a \n 11 point lead at halftime. The Salukis searched for ways to unlock Bama's stifling defense. The half brought about a switch in momentum, and it was now the Salukis who controlled both ends of the floor, gaining a 64-63 lead in the closing seconds. Alabama left the ball in the hands of their leader Antoine Pettway, whose runner with five to play put Alabama back ahead. A missed jumper by Saluki star Darren Brooks at the buzzer sealed the win for the Tide.
