Game 4 - Florida vs. James Madison 1994
The last game of our first window goes back over 25 years. Florida looked every bit like a team that could make a long tournament run, with solid guard play, an excellent big man in future NBA first round pick Andrew DeClerq, and an excellent head coach, who also coached in the first game of our tournament in Lon Kruger. The Dukes, coached by the legendary Lefty Driesell, played every bit like a team with nothing to lose, while the Gators played very much like a team afraid of making a mistake, JMU led 22-18 at halftime, which does not undersell the action at all. The second half, however, was one of my favorite halves of basketball ever. JMU's Clayton Ritter played like a man possessed, scoring a game high 27 points. For every punch the Gators took, they threw right back. The Gators began the second half afire, taking a 29-22 lead. From there it was just a slugfest between two teams with no intention of losing a basketball game. Unfortunately I have not found any video of this game, and hope it isn't lost to history. The Gators would move on, 64-62.
