Game 38 - Michigan vs. Loyola Marymount
I wrote a decent amount about Hank Gathers when we talked about Loyola's first round win over New Mexico State. I didn't give Bo Kimble as much love as he deserved, perhaps. Kimble was truly a great player, and even if his NBA career was a bit disappointing, I think we can agree there were some mitigating circumstances. Kimble is an even finer human than he was a ball player, and that deserves mention.
Now, onto the game. Michigan was the defending champs. Sure, they lost Glen Rice, but Rumeal Robinson, Loy Vaught, and Terry Mills were all first round picks still around in 1990. The Wolverines entered the tournament ranked thirteenth in the country, having been ranked as high as third during the season. The Gaels absolutely dismantled Michigan 149-115. It is still the highest scoring game in the history of the Tournament. Mills and Robinson led Michigan with 23 points each. Kimble had 37 points, 7 boards, 4 asissts, and two steals for Loyola, while teammate Jeff Fryer made 11(!) of 15(!) three point shots (in 1990!) to chip in 41 points.
If you are familiar with the old MTV show "Pimp My Ride", you will understand the reference. Im going to go all Xzibit on you now. I heard you all like points, so I found you a game with points on top of points, with points in reserve. Enjoy this one in full.
